How to Finish the Year Strong

The year started off great, I’m sure you made resolutions, maybe some of your goals included getting in better shape. You were motivated, dedicated and ready to take on the world! Then March came around and your gym clothes started getting used less…. And even less in June… now your leggings are only worn for watching movies and you don’t even remember how to get to the gym.

This is the time of year where I start seeing my clients less and less. Motivation is down, they’re stressed, busy and some of them even say “well I’ll just start over in January”… yikes.

Carrying the same inspiration year round can be exhausting, but don’t give up! There are still four months left in the year for you to put in some serious work towards your goals, here are six ways to help reignite your fire.

1.       Set new goals. Have you always wanted to do a pullup? Maybe you want to squat two plates? This is the time! Figure out a couple goals for yourself that are specific and measurable and dedicate at least 3-4 days per week toward accomplishing them.

2.       Change up your workout routine. Maybe you don’t have resolutions or current goals, a great way to inspire yourself and get out of a rut is to try new workout routines or skills. If you are tired of doing the same lifting split, try adding in plyometric exercises or trail running.

3.       Buy new workout clothes. This may seem trite but being excited about wearing a new outfit might be the push you need to get back to working out. Whether it be a headband, new leggings, or an entire ensemble, wearing a new item can help get you excited to get back in the gym.

4.       Get a workout buddy. Having someone keep you accountable can help get you in the gym more often. If you’re competitive, a workout partner can also push you harder and help you get more out of your workouts

5.       Get a personal trainer. Nothing makes you more accountable than having to pay someone for their time. Personal training can also be a good option for those that are burnt out on planning their own workouts, who want to up the intensity, work on form, or learn new skills.

6.       Make time for yourself. As we approach the holidays, you might feel obligated to spend more time with family, bake that extra pie for the bake sale or be stressed about buying gifts for everyone. It might seem difficult, but taking ten to twenty minutes a day to go on a walk or do a home workout can help you destress and keep you working towards your goals. It might feel like it isn’t enough compared to your usual gym routine, but something is always better than nothing.
