How To Start Weightlifting

“I want to start weightlifting, but don’t know where to start!”

Starting strength sports can be overwhelming, especially when you have no experience. Whether you are wanting to compete in powerlifting, Olympic lifting, or just want to get under a barbell, here are some next steps to get you there.

  1. Join your local lifting club. There is nothing wrong with staying at a commercial gym, but being part of a gym that caters to competitive and hobby lifters alike provides an environment that is unmatched. Being around experienced lifters will help you learn more and you’ll probably get stronger faster; not to mention there is usually more equipment available as well as experienced coaches.

  2. Start following a program. There are so many free programs out there that are simple and easy to follow for beginners. 5/3/1 is a great powerlifting program for beginner athletes and websites like Catalyst Athletics have free daily workouts for Olympic lifting. Following a program will help you properly overload and keep you on track.

  3. Master the basics. Don’t underestimate the value of proper form and stability. Taking the time to establish core strength and movement patterns will help you progress faster and will reduce your risk of injury.

  4. Enhance your nutrition. Getting stronger requires calories and if you have a habit of undereating, this is the time to start filling your diet with a healthy balance of carbs, fats, and proteins.
